Am I understanding you correctly if I say that using the USB harddrive to boot on and thus containing the operating system, in this case Windows XP can or will run slower than using the ordinary harddrive?

Does the characteristics of the harddrive, such as RPM, cache, and so on play any noticable part there? Also, if the USB harddrive are used as the secondary harddrive the built-in harddrive are used to boot , will it still be slower to access that harddrive or will it run at "normal" capacity?

Also, are there any difference between desktop and laptop machines in this issue, that is will the lag be more noticable on either system cause I assume that the problem exists on both? And finally, how much slower are we talking here? Will the system be barely usable? I hope you dont mind me asking so many questions, I didnt think of this before and would like to get all facts alright before deciding.

I am really really interested in knowing the exact results from the benchmark, so if you have the possibility to run the benchmark again I would really appreciate it. Its also interesting to hear your experience when it comes to booting from the external harddrive. What are you overall opinion when it comes to using external harddrives, is it working alright with no problems besides the booting problem you mentioned?

Overall - it's good to have enough space. There is no problem with programs installed on external disk; it's good for movies, graphic files, nucleotide databases as well. Probably OEM version has some restrictions, or something went wrong during installation - I just hadn't enough time to investigate situation more thoroughly.
